An Earnest Call for Humility and Shared Purpose
The foundation of a harmonious community, especially for those who share a common faith, lies in the genuine and active practice of deep humility. We are called to a higher standard of selflessness: one that requires us to see every person with respect, intentionally valuing others as more important than ourselves. This outlook is the remedy for the destructive poisons of selfish ambition, which seeks only personal gain, and pride, which fosters an unwarranted sense of superiority. To foster a truly unified spirit, we must eliminate self-centered drives from our thoughts and actions.
Our concern must extend well beyond the narrow limits of our individual interests and desires. A life lived only for personal pleasure is a limited and impoverished life. Instead, we are commanded to intentionally expand our focus to include the concerns, needs, and overall well-being of those around us. This broad, outward-focused care is a sign of true Christian fellowship.
For believers, the ultimate and flawless example of this selfless attitude is the life and person of Christ Jesus. His very being provides the essential blueprint for how we should behave and think.
Consider His incredible pre-existence: Though He inherently possessed the co-equal nature and eternal attributes of God—fully sharing in the Divine Being's glory, power, and essence—He chose not to cling defensively to this equality. He did not exploit His divine status for personal gain or use it as a way to avoid a path of service and suffering. This radical, voluntary act of letting go and humbling Himself is the standard against which we measure our own readiness to sacrifice our status and privileges for the benefit of others.
