Chikungunya Virus arrives in the United States.

Image
The Haitians call it “breaking bone” disease because the joint pain is so excruciating it feels like your bones are breaking. And now the chikungunya virus, also known as CHIKV, has come to the United States, with the first cases of the mosquito-borne illness having spread locally in Florida. There is no effective treatment. “I’ve had a broken bone before. This was more severe than a broken bone,” says Dr. Jen Halverson, who contracted the illness while traveling in Haiti. Dozens of American have come down with chikungunya (pronounced chick-en-gun-yuh) after traveling in the Caribbean this spring and summer, but now for the first time the virus is apparently spreading within the U.S. Stanley Perlman, M.D., one of the world’s top infectious disease experts, tells Newsmax Health that it was just a matter of time before the devastating tropical disease landed on our shores because the pathogen can be carried by two types of mosquitoes common in the U.S. “I expected this to happen. The d...

New Rule Allows Anyone to Track Spending Online

FCC Political TV Ads: New Rule Allows Anyone to Track Spending Online Transparency in political TV ads just got a little easier for watchdog groups and others as a little-talked about FCC rule took effect Tuesday, requiring broadcasters to disclose online who paid for those spots. Exactly who is funding political ads has always been public information, but interested citizens used to have to physically travel to each television station to get it. Under the new rule, political ad buys will be available online from about 1,000 broadcasters around the country, Dennis Wharton, a spokesperson for the National Association of Broadcasters, told The Washington Post. "Suppose you're running a political campaign. Beginning now, you're going to be able to sit at your computer and find out where your competition has been taking out ads, when they got them for and for how much money," The Post reported. "That kind of information may have always been accessible if you wer...

What Makes a Pastor Steal Church Money?

Image
Have you ever asked yourself why a pastor would steal church money? Seriously! If you look at this question with a magnifying glass it is not as simple as the pastor just being greedy. It goes much deeper than that. Why would a pastor go against everything that he knows and teaches to be true, deliberately violate those truths, and then try to hide it to perpetuate his behavior? In the business world and in the church the most common crime committed is embezzlement. Why is it that many pastors are now falling into this sin in larger numbers? Let me give you some statistics* about the life of many pastors today. This may help you better understand why stealing church money is on the rise. A little over 80% of pastors and their spouses currently or frequently struggle with discouragement, disappointment or depression. More than 40% of pastors feel they lead lives that are too busy and they often feel guilt over it because their children are the ones who suffer most. The majority ...

No Confidence in the Flesh - Universal Church of the Living God

No Confidence in the Flesh - Universal Church of the Living God Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith.  Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.  Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example. 18 For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.  But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.  He will take our weak mort...

Memorial day

Image
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces.[1] The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the last Monday of May,[2] was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate theUnion and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service.[1] It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountains. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancest...
