Trump signs tax, government spending bills into law - AOL News

Trump signs tax, government spending bills into law - AOL News WASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump signed Republicans' massive $1.5 trillion tax overhaul into law on Friday, cementing the biggest legislative victory of his first year in office, and also approved a short-term spending bill that averts a possible government shutdown. The two pieces of legislation represent Trump's most significant accomplishment with Congress since taking office in January, as well as a sign of what awaits when he returns from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after the Christmas holiday. The tax package, the largest such overhaul since the 1980s, slashes the corporate rate from 35 percent to 21 percent and temporarily reduces the tax burden for most individuals as well. Democrats had opposed the bill as a giveaway to the wealthy that would add $1.5 trillion to the $20 trillion national debt during the next decade.

Haitians and Dominicans remember Parsley Massacre, 75 years later | Miami Herald

Haitians and Dominicans remember Parsley Massacre, 75 years later | Miami Herald Seventy-five years ago, this border town, separated from Haiti by the ominously named Massacre River, was the center of a killing field. On orders from dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, thousands of Haitians – many born in the Dominican Republic -- living in the area were rounded up and killed; hacked to death with machetes and stabbed with bayonets. What became known as the Parsley Massacre — or simply  el corte  (the cutting) — forever altered Haitian-Dominican relations, which remain tense today. Despite its significance, the massacre became little more than a historical footnote. Standing on the banks of the Massacre River, looking across its shallow waters to Haiti on Thursday night, hundreds of Dominicans, led by activists and scholars, sought to reclaim the forgotten tragedy.

Rafael Trujillo - One of the worst dictators who ruled the Dominican Republic for 31 years

Rafael Trujillo - One of the worst dictators who ruled the Dominican Republic for 31 years He was a politician and soldier trained by U.S. Marines. In 1930, Trujillo became president of the country through political maneuvers and torture. He served as a president from 1930 to 1938 and again from 1942 to 1952. In the meantime, he put in place puppet presidents, first his brother Héctor Trujillo and later, Joaquin Balaguer, neither of which had any power and Trujillo was always the ultimate leader and chief of the country. Born in 1891 in San Cristobal, in the Dominican Republic, Trujillo went on to become one of the worst dictators in the world. His foreign policy was inclined towards the United States and against communism. His domestic policy was built on terror, fear, control, and total compliance with his will. People called him “El Jefe” (The Chief or The Boss) and were utterly obedient towards him and his regime. Resistance was dealt with harshly and any rebel usually ended ...
