North Korean Foreign Minister Says Trump Has 'Declared War' - NBC News

North Korean Foreign Minister Says Trump Has 'Declared War' - NBC News The White House on Monday rejected the notion that the U.S. had declared war and ripped Pyongyang's talk of shooting down American planes. "We have not declared war on North Korean, and frankly the suggestion of that is absurd," White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at a press briefing Monday. She added that "it's never appropriate for a country to shoot down another country’s aircraft when" the planes are over international waters. Kim and his officials are no stranger to fiery, war-like rhetoric, often threatening to immolate the U.S. in "a sea of fire" and to reduce "the whole of the U.S. mainland to ruins." Since assuming office, Trump has also joined in with bold language of his own, warning North Korea that he could visit  "fire" and "fury"  on the authoritarian regime if it threatened the U.S.

Jimmy Carter and Putin Agree on N. Korea: US 'Oligarchy' is the Problem

Jimmy Carter and Putin Agree on N. Korea: US 'Oligarchy' is the Problem Anybody who knows anything about geopolitics knows there is not going to be a war in North Korea. That is exactly what we said in April, when this whole Korea thing started:  Don't Let the Media Make You Fear War With North Korea. Turn off Your iPhone and Go for a Walk . Nothing has changed since then. There is one, and only one reason the administration kicks up a fuss about Korea, - to change the narrative from things they don't want dominating the headlines - that is it.

Pakistani Christian handed death sentence for 'blasphemy' | A Russian Orthodox Church Website

Pakistani Christian handed death sentence for 'blasphemy' | A Russian Orthodox Church Website A Christian man has been sentenced to death in Pakistan for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad. Nadeem James, 35, was convicted under the country’s controversial blasphemy laws on Friday with his lawyer, Riaz Anjum, saying he was framed. James went on the run last July before being arrested after he was accused of sending a poem to his friend on WhatsApp that was derogatory about the Islamic prophet. But defence lawyer Anjum told AFP news agency he was being falsely accused because his friend was angered about an affair James, a Christian, was allegedly having with a Muslim woman. ‘Mr James was handed a death sentence by the court on Thursday on blasphemy charges,’ he said. ‘My client will appeal the sentence in the high court as he has been framed by his friend, who was annoyed over Mr James’ affair with a Muslim girl.’ Under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws anyone accused of insulti...

He was born on the island of Haiti around 1745 to a French mariner and a mother who was a slave of African descent. DuSable was educated in France and then, in the early 1770s, sailed to New Orleans. From there, he made his way up the Mississippi River to Peoria, Illinois where he married a Potawatomi woman named Catherine in a tribal ceremony. The couple had two children, Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, Jr. and Suzanne. The marriage formally recognized before a Catholic priest in Cahokia, Illinois in 1778. DuSable settled along the northern bank of the Chicago River near Lake Michigan ca. 1779 and developed a prosperous trading post and farm.  His cabin  is often depicted a modest structure, but written desc...

Samuel Johnson: Who was he, and why is he so important? | The Independent

Samuel Johnson: Who was he, and why is he so important? | The Independent Samuel Johnson was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, the son of a bookseller. He attended Prembroke College, Oxford, in his late teens but struggled to afford the fees, complained of the intellectual idleness of his contemporaries and felt humiliated when a fellow student took pity on him and presented him with a replacement pair of shoes as a  gift . The great man left university without completing his degree and launched himself into the coffeehouses and print shops of literary London, living a life of genteel poverty, forever under threat from his creditors. His earliest works included the long-form poems ‘London’ and ‘The Vanity of Human Wishes’ and the periodicals  The Rambler  and  The Idler .

Trump heads to first UN summit amid uncertainty on North Korea, Iran, Paris climate deal

Trump heads to first UN summit amid uncertainty on North Korea, Iran, Paris climate deal NEW YORK —  President Trump will make his United Nations General Assembly debut this week amid uncertainty on how his administration will handle rising North Korean aggression, a looming deadline to decide the future of the Iran nuclear deal and the  U.S. position on withdrawing from or staying in  the Paris climate accords. Trump will focus much of his attention at the summit on reforming the U.N. itself, headlining a meeting on Monday with dozens of world leaders who signed onto his 10-point pledge to clean up an organization he once described as "a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time."

Iran leader Khamenei warns U.S. against 'wrong move' on nuclear deal

Iran leader Khamenei warns U.S. against 'wrong move' on nuclear deal DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will not be bullied by the United States and will react strongly to any “wrong move” by Washington on Tehran’s nuclear deal, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday. His comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Iran was violating “the spirit” of the 2015 deal under which Tehran got sanctions relief in return for curbing its nuclear program. “The Iranian nation is standing firm and any wrong move by the domineering regime regarding the (nuclear accord) will face the reaction of the Islamic Republic,” state television quoted Ayatollah Khamenei as saying. Washington extended some sanctions relief for Iran on Thursday under the nuclear deal with world powers but said it had yet to decide whether to maintain the agreement. Trump must make a decision by mid-October whether to certify that Iran is complying with the deal, known as the Joint Comprehens...

Latin American nations seek Venezuela crisis mediation

Latin American nations seek Venezuela crisis mediation SANTO DOMINGO/CARACAS (Reuters) - Various Latin American nations will join an attempt to mediate Venezuela’s political crisis in new talks later this month, the president of the Dominican Republic said on Thursday. The next talks would be held on Sept. 27, again in the Dominican capital Santo Domingo, he added.

London Underground explosion at Parsons Green station injures several commuters - The Washington Post

London Underground explosion at Parsons Green station injures several commuters - The Washington Post LONDON —   A homemade bomb sent a scorching cloud of smoke and flames through a London subway car Friday, injuring at least 22 rush-hour commuters and sending people scrambling for safety in what police called a terrorist incident. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and authorities gave no details on possible suspects. But the incident was quickly labeled a terrorist strike, and security measures were tightened across London’s vast mass transit network. The British Broadcasting Corp. reported that the device had a timer, suggesting that some degree of bombmaking knowledge was used in creating it. “This was a device intended to cause significant harm,” said Prime Minister Theresa May, but it remained unclear whether the explosive detonated prematurely or malfunctioned in some way at the Parsons Green station, about three miles southwest of central London. It also was n...
