GOP rhetoric on Muslims seen as having little cost

GOP rhetoric on Muslims seen as having little cost : Some leading Republican presidential candidates seem to view Muslims as fair game for increasingly harsh words they might use with more caution against any other group for fear of the political cost. So far, that strategy is winning support from conservatives influential in picking the nominee.

Putin orders sanctions against Turkey after downing of jet - WSVN-TV - 7NEWS Miami Ft. Lauderdale News, Weather, Deco ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday called for sanctions against Turkey, following the downing this week by Turkey of a Russian warplane. The decree published on the Kremlin's website Saturday came hours after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had voiced regret over the incident, saying his country was "truly saddened" by the event and wished it hadn't occurred. It includes a ban on some goods and forbids extensions of labor contracts for Turks working in Russia as of Jan. 1. It doesn't specify what goods are to be banned or give other details, but it also calls for ending chartered flights from Russia to Turkey and for Russian tourism companies to stop selling vacation packages that would include a stay in Turkey. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev earlier in the week had ordered his cabinet to develop a list of g...

Paris climate activists put under house arrest using emergency laws | Environment | The Guardian

Paris climate activists put under house arrest using emergency laws | Environment | The Guardian At least 24 climate activists have been put under house arrest by French police, accused of flouting a ban on organising protests during next week’s  Paris climate summit , the Guardian has learned. One legal adviser to the activists said many officers raided his  Paris  apartment and occupied three floors and a staircase in his block.  French authorities did not respond to requests for comment but lawyers said that the warrants were issued under state of emergency laws, imposed after the terror attacks that killed 130 people earlier this month. The author and climate change campaigner, Naomi Klein, accused French authorities of “a gross abuse of power that risks turning the summit into a farce”. “Climate summits are not photo opportunities to boost the popularity of politicians,” she told the Guardian. “Given the stakes of the climate crisis, they are by their nature h...

France Puts 24 Climate Activists Under House Arrest Ahead of UN Talks

F French authorities have placed 24 activists under house arrest ahead of major UN climate warming talks starting near Paris next week, using the state of emergency powers declared after the Paris attacks. The interior ministry said Friday the measures had been taken to prevent the activists from demonstrating ahead of the COP21 conference, but their lawyers and Amnesty International accused the government of abusing the state of emergency.

Refugee Expert: ISIS at Root of Crisis

Refugee Expert: ISIS at Root of Crisis American and European politicians are wasting time trying to keep Syrian refugees out of their countries instead of focusing on the real problem, ISIS, says former Clinton administration official Amed Khan.

Why American people are scared of Syrian refugees.

Why American people are scared of Syrian refugees.   So why the hysteria? While there are plenty of nativists in the country, nativism is not the whole story. Most Americans are not nativists—the country has welcomed millions of refugees and other immigrants. The explanation for the public’s reaction lies elsewhere. Overreaction to tiny but frightening risks is not a new problem. Americans fear flying much more than driving, even though flying is much safer. Yet the fear of flying has led to massive—probably excessive—public investment in airplane safety while investment in auto safety has languished. Other famous public overreactions, described by Cass Sunstein and Richard Zeckhauser  in a recent paper , include the reaction to Love Canal (no evidence of adverse effects), the pesticide Alar (risk of cancer extremely unlikely), shark attacks (hardly ever happen), and the anthrax attack in 2001 (five deaths). Genetically modified organisms and vaccines also terrify some peopl...

Why American people are scared of Syrian refugees.

Why American people are scared of Syrian refugees.   According to one poll , 53 percent of Americans disapprove of allowing them into the country while another 11 percent would admit only Syrians who are Christians. Most governors have said that they will not allow Syrian refugees into their states (though they have no legal authority to block them), and now Congress has gotten into the act.  By a vote of 289–137 , the House passed a bill that would impose substantial hurdles on further refugee settlement.

Syrian Refugees Don’t Pose a Serious Security Threat | Cato @ Liberty

S The brutal terrorist attack in France last Friday reignited a debate over accepting refugees from Syria and the Middle East.  A Syrian who applied for asylum could have been one of the attackers, although his   passport was a forgery .  (As of this writing, all identified attackers have been   French or Belgian nationals .) Governors and presidential candidates have voiced opposition to accepting any Syrian refugees, while several bills in Congress could   effectively end the program . There are many differences between Europe’s vetting of asylum seekers from Syria and how the United States screens refugees.  The geographic distance between the United States and Syria allows our government to better vet those seeking to come here, while large numbers of Syrians who try to go to Europe are less carefully vetted.  A lax security situation there does not imply a lax security situation here.   yrian Refugees Don’t Pose a Serious Security Threat | C...

The Bible says, "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus"

Do not pray in vain!! I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:1-5
